British Steel is pressing ahead with its mission to create the next generation of steelmakers, throwing open its doors to a fresh wave of apprentices. The company is looking to bring on board more than 40 new apprentices across its Scunthorpe, Teesside, and Skinningrove sites, as it continues to drive forward its long-term future.

The latest opportunities follow a significant commitment to early careers development this year, with 70 new apprentices welcomed across the firm’s sites in September. Applications for the 2027 intake are now open, with vacancies available across all three locations. Alongside the apprenticeship positions, several graduate roles are also up for grabs, providing multiple pathways into a long-term engineering career within the business.

The new positions, which commence in early September 2027, include 24 roles at Scunthorpe — comprising 12 electrical apprenticeships and 12 mechanical apprenticeships. The Northern Mills at Teesside and Skinningrove are offering a further eight electrical and eight mechanical apprenticeships respectively.

British Steel’s apprenticeship scheme blends practical, hands-on experience with fully funded training and nationally recognised qualifications, enabling recruits to earn a wage while developing their skills.

Successful applicants will initially undertake specialist training before transitioning into operational areas of the business, where they will work shoulder-to-shoulder with seasoned colleagues to build the expertise required to support steelmaking operations, reports Grimsby Live.

Successful candidates will acquire invaluable hands-on experience, contributing to live projects while honing the technical and professional skills required to forge a thriving career. British Steel is additionally recruiting graduates in 2027 for positions in manufacturing operations, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and materials engineering.

Further details regarding graduate opportunities across other areas of the business are anticipated to be announced in the coming weeks. Those applying for the apprenticeship programme will require a minimum of three GCSEs at Grade 4/C or above, including Maths, English and Science, alongside a positive attitude, a strong work ethic and a genuine willingness to learn.

Apprentices will benefit from a competitive package, comprising 35 days’ holiday, including bank holidays, a company pension scheme, a health cash plan, an Employee Assistance Programme, all necessary safety clothing and access to discounts at local businesses.

British Steel’s intention is to offer permanent employment upon successful completion of the programme. The deadline for apprenticeship applications is 8 March 2027, while graduate applications must be submitted by 26 February 2027.

Nick Ashton, HR Director at British Steel, said: “The steel industry offers a huge variety of career opportunities, and we’re committed to helping people develop the skills and confidence they need to build successful and rewarding careers.

“Investing in future talent is essential to the long-term success of our business and we’re proud to continue creating opportunities for young people in the communities that have supported British Steel for generations, from Scunthorpe to Teesside and Skinningrove.

“Many of our colleagues began their careers through apprenticeship and graduate programmes and have gone on to hold key roles across the organisation. We want to attract ambitious people who are eager to learn, develop their skills and play a part in the future of British Steel.”
